Livonia Community Theatre to Host 'Shrek The Musical' Camp Broadway Edition for Young Performers This Summer

When younger Livonia-area students took the stage in Shrek Kids! on July 17, they were closing out a week of rehearsals through Livonia Community Theatre's Shining Stars camp. For families in Wayne and Oakland counties, the nonprofit offers a nearby entry point to theater training without a trip to a larger regional arts institution.

The performance is a point of local pride. But whether week-long summer camps alone create sustained pathways into the arts for Livonia families, or signal the need for deeper year-round programming, remains an open question in a community where affordable cultural access can be hard to find.

Shining Stars ran July 13–17, 2026, as one of two week-long youth camps the theater offered in July, alongside Broadway Bound, held July 6–10. Shining Stars was designed for campers entering grades 2 through 5. The program ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, followed by a longer Friday, from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., for the performance. Tuition is $275 for the first camper and $225 for additional campers from the same household, and the theater provides scholarships for students in financial need.

Patricia Hutchison, a retired Livonia Public Schools music and drama teacher, founded the organization in 2011 under the name Paul's Players. It renamed itself Livonia Community Theatre in 2017 to reflect its commitment to the city. Hutchison was inducted into the Livonia Hall of Fame for her decades of dedication to promoting performing arts in the community.

The theater's mission is to enrich lives through high-quality theatrical experiences, educational programs, and community outreach that affirm and challenge audiences while celebrating diversity and providing opportunities for everyone to participate in drama and musical theater. It has offered musical summer camps for kids for 13 years as of 2023. The Livonia Civic Chorus awarded $600 to Livonia Community Theater to support its summer youth programs in 2023. Beyond camps, the theater presents Shakespeare in the Park as a free community event at Stymelski Veterans Park, with performances of The Tempest scheduled for July 17–19 and July 24–26, 2026.

For week-long youth theater day camps in Metro Detroit in 2026, typical tuition ranges from $175 to $400, with most programs clustering around $200–$275 per week. Matrix Theatre offers a one-week youth camp for $175, representing the low end of the local market. Wayne State's WOW Broadway Bootcamp charges $275 for a week-long program. Village Arts Factory runs grant-funded youth theatre programs with Canton Village Theater, including a work-study track where teens earn a $500 stipend and have their $100 registration refunded on completion, reducing financial barriers for participating teens. Both of the theater's 2026 summer youth camps were concentrated in a three-week window. Livonia Community Theatre has not published plans to expand youth programming beyond summer or add fall and spring seasons. Whether Livonia families are seeking more year-round, affordable youth theater programming—and what it would take to build that infrastructure in a working-family community—remains a question worth deeper reporting, even as the Shining Stars camp demonstrates one model of accessible summer arts access.
